Nabakrushna Choudhury: A Biography
He was born in the year of 1901. During the heyday of the Indian freedom movement,
Nabakrushna Choudhury
was one of the young people of Odisha who had joined the struggle. Shri Choudhury left his college in 1921 in responce to Gandhiji's call to youth to work for Swaraj. In the twenties he came back to Odisha after the studies. He had Smt. Malati Devi with him to whom he had choosen as life partner and who was always with him through the thicks and thin of his pursuits.
Choudhury to start with, had Jawaharlal as his model in the freedom struggle, and many others of his compatriots in the country, his leanings were socialistic and hence Gandhiji's dream of a just society had also a tremendous appeal for him. He was one of the front-liners in the socialist movement in Odisha and through he was all along in the rank and file of the Indian National Congress, he was very much to the left in the mother organisation. The task of organizing the peasants as a political force in Odisha fell to the Congress among whom Nabakrushna Choudhury was the foremost. He also played an active role in the State People's Movement in Odisha, especially in Dhenkanal.
Nabakrushna Choudhury: A Political Overview
When the first election was held in India, after political freedom was won, Shri Choudhury was elected to the Odisha's Legislative Assembly and became a minister. Later he also became Chief Minister. Through in office, he was more on the side of the people than of the party or the Government which it had been called upon to run. He was never satisfied as head of the Government because he thought that the later was not doing enough. The disillusionment grew and he resigned to join Binoba Bhav's bhoodan and Sarovodaya Movement worked side by side with Jayaprakash and others. And after that too colled down , Nabakrushna Choudhury retired to work with his wife who was running an Ashram in the very heart of Odisha , where meant to go to remote backward areas of the state to work in the villages. That ashram, the Bajirout Chhatrabas has all along been instrumental in bringing about political and social awareness in the people who are at the hindmost and hence are always subject to all kinds of exploitation, including the government.
Political power did never corrupt
Nabakrushna Choudhury
as it has done in the case of many in India after independence. Thus it was inevitable that he died very died very disgruntled and angry with leadership that he thought did not do enough for the people yet very hopeful that the generation that was coming would do better.
