Mahurikalua, one of the famous tourist places in Ganjam district of Odisha. Every year thousands of tourists visit this place. This is one of the best picnic spot in that area. Goddess Mahurikalua is worshiped in this temple which is situated in the forest of Kerandi hills.

How to reach Mahurikalua of Ganjam?


This is very nearer to the Silk City Berhampur. It is approximately 15 KM from this city. It is situated 180 KM from Odisha capital Bhubaneswar. Tourists have to reach Berhampur by train then they can book a tourist car or vehicle and can reach the spot within half an hour. A good Pakka road is made by our Odisha tourism which is leads to the temple. Remember no regular bus facility is available to the temple in regular days.

Festivals Celebrated in the temple Mahurikalua of Ganjam


All Sankrantis of every month, special Mesha Sankrathi is the most important festival of this temple. This day is celebrated as Annual festival of this temple. So, you can expect approximately one lakh visitors on this special day.

The old tale behind Mahurikalua Temple


This temple was worshiped by the king Mahuri and his family and he had made the temple in his dynasty earlier than British rule. People believed that the deity protected the king from every trouble by a special sword. The special sword was presented by the deity to the king, which was very short but in the critical time it become bigger. Now there is no sign of such sword and it remains as a belief only. Natural Beauty of this temple


This temple was surrounded by green hills, which doubles its beauty. The silent hills and songs of the birds make it more beautiful. You can feel the peace from your heart after reaching that temple. You can able to enjoy the natural and pollution free climate here. Actually the real temple was situated on the top of the hill but later the king made a temple at the foot of the hill by which many devotees could able to offer prayer to the deity.

Earlier the royal family of the king Mahuri was look after this temple but now one of the famous business family, Rauta family look after this temple. The management may be changed but still today the royal family plays a major role in every religious activity of the temple.

Except the temple, there is a small rest house for visitors. Now by the help of Orissa Tourism some new development works like 999 steps to the hill and Sankitran mandapam is in progress.

Other tourist places of Ganjam, Odisha


  • Dakshinapur Reservoir, which is situated very close to the temple.
  • Taptapani, one of the most famous hot geyser of Odish, which is situated just 50 KM from this spot.
  • Tara Tarini, another beautiful hill station of Ganjam. This is situated just 30 KM away from Berhampur.
  • Gopalpur sea beach, the famous beach of Ganjam. This is present just 22 KM from Berhampur.
  • Potagarh of Ganjam; the oldest township created by British. 25 km from Berhampur.
