An Outlook to Silk City Berhampur

Berhampur is the oldest city of Orissa; it also called as silk city of Orissa. Most of the people of southern Orissa visit Berhampur for shopping clothes, ornaments, ready made items etc. Some people says it is second Kolkata of India, where one can get all variety of items related from household to IT equipments.

Berhampur Bada Bazar is famous for all kind of Jewellery, ornaments, Saree (Brahmapur Patta) / Dress-materials, all kinds of household materials shopping. Bada Bazar is the combination of Hanuman Bazar, Sana Bazar and Bada Bazar with more than thousand shops. Ganesh Market situated at Bada Bazar is famous for imported items and technology based items. Annapurna Market situated in the center of city famous for all kind of house hold shopping. Gandhi Nagar Market is famous for computer, laptop and peripherals. Apart from these, there are many shopping malls are there, which makes this city eminent.

Berhampur 'Thakurani Yatra' is one of the most famous festivals in Orissa. It occurs in every three years in the month of March 'Chaitra Masa'. Devotees from all over the country visit here in this occasion to be blessed by the Goddess. Ganjam 'Danda Yatra' is also famous for festive of Goddess Kali, where people with pious purpose celebrate perform this for a period of 13, 17 or 21 days.

Tourist places nearby Berhampur:

1. Tara Tarini, 25 Km from Berhampur. It is famous for temple of Goddess Tara Tarini, which is situated in the bank of river Rushikulya on top of Kumari hill with 999 steps. This is one of the Devi Shakti Peetha of India. The Yatra (festive) take place in every year on the month of March 'Chaitra Masa'.

2. Taptapani, is famous for Hot water spring; Taptapani, situated 51 km from Berhampur.

3. Gopalpur on sea, situated at 16 km from Berhampur, Gopalpur is an ancient seaport. Its lighthouse and boating - yatching attracts tourist to come every year. The Gopalpur Beach Festival is also famous in India, which helps to promote its culture and tradition someway.

4. Dhabaleswar, 15 km away from Gopalpur is presenting its beauty of temple of Lord Shiva and the picnic spot attract tourists from all over the world.

5. Rambha Pantha Nivas, situated at Chilka Lake is around 60 km far from Berhampur. One can stay and enjoy the beauty of Chilka & its nearest places, at Pantha Nivas.
