In this resource i have listed the different languages spoken by the Orissa people. It includes languages like oriya and other languages. You can also get to know the details of how oriya langauge came into existence. That is the descendant of oriya language.


Types of Languages in Orissa


Orissa language is a direct descendant of eastern Magadhi. Oriya language belongs to the Aryan family of languages. As it is related to the aryan families it is mainly related with Assamese, Bengali and Maithili. The other languages that are evolved in orissa is due to the influence of the neighboring regional languages of the Aryan and Dravidian families which are listed below:
- Baleswari (Balasore)
- Bhatri (Koraput)
- Laria (Sambalpur)
- Sambalpuri (Sambalpur and other western districts)
- Ganjami (Ganjam and Koraput)
- Chhatisgarhi (Chhatisgarh and adjoining areas of Orissa)
- Medinipuri (Midnapur district of West Bengal).

Languages spoken in North and South Orissa


Orssa is divided as north orissa ans south orissa. These both places has it's own version of slang. The Oriya script which was descended from Brahmi is a Dravidian during the reign of the Ganga kings.
