Information About Hirakud Dam,Orissa

This dam has been constructed across the Mahanadi near Hirakud about 15km>. upstream from Sambalpur.It is the longest dam (4,800 meter long) in the World.The stored water which forms a lake measuring 650 sq. km. will ultimately irrigate about 4 lakh hectares of land.The dam projects the Mahanadi Delta and the districts of Bolangir and Sambalpur.At present about 2,43 lakh hectares are being irrigated in the two districts,the power house at the dam has an installed capacity of 123,000 KW.
His power has attracted new industries near Hirakud dam and elsewhere in Orissa.Aluminium plant at hirakud,Iron and steel works at rourkela,a cement factory at rajagangapur and towns as far as puri receive power from project .Another power house has been constructed at a place known as Chiplima.225km. downstream for the hirakud dam.The total installed capacity of two power house is 270MW.
