The movie was directed by Rajkumar Hilani. The producer of the movie was Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The story of the film was taken by the novel Five Point Someone which was written by Chetan Bhagat, who is one of the famous writer of today and is well known among the youngsters. The main stars of the film are Aamir Khan, R.Madahavan, Sharman Joshi and Kareena Kapoor.

3 Idiots was released on the December month of the year 2009. After release the film was very much successful and it broke all the records in the box office. The film crossed Rs 1 billion mark in the box office and this was the first film in the year 2009 to do so. The film also won many awards. It won 6 filmfare awards. It was given the award of the Best film, Best director and it was also given 16 IIFA awards. Some real inventions like the exercise-bicycle-cum-washing-machine was also used in the film which was invented by some students of Kerala. The film will also be made in other languages of Telegu and Tamil.

There was an Engineering college named Imperial College of Engineering "ICE", which was one of the top most college of India as per the movie. Farhan. Raju and Ranchoddas were three students of this college. These three people shared the same room in the hostel. Rncho studies Engineering for his own joy and passion though he was not given the degree of B.Tech, Farhan had a wish to become an wildlife photographer but he was studying Engineering to fulfil his father's wish. Raju was studying Engineering to raise his family income as they were too poor. Rancho was an intelligent student and he used to irritate the Prof. of the college by his answers. Virus was a strict principal. Joy asked for an extension for his project which was declined by Virus and so Joy committed suicide. Rancho confronts Virus for the suicide of Joy and blames Virus for the reason and says that its not a suicide its a murder.
Virus tries to break the friendship of them and tries to separate their rooms too. Chatur was his favorite student and he sent Raju to his room. Chatur uses the technique of memorizing to reach the top most level but still he cant score the highest marks. Rancho tops the examination whereas Raju and Farhan were in the bottom. On teacher's day celebration Chatur had to make a speech and that speech was edited by Rancho as he knew that Chatur is going to memorize the speech too. This irritated Virus and other important persons present over there.
Rancho falls in love with Pia who was the daughter of Virus and a medical student too. Rancho always used to come first in the examination, Chatur 2nd while his friends Raju and Farhan always had the last two position. The 3 idiots entered Pia's sister's marriage too for a meal.
This is how they angered Virus. The three friends were drunk and in that condition they also went to Pia's house to propose her. Virus was very much angered by that. Virus caught Raju and then he makes a decision of setting a very tough question paper so that Raju cannot pass in the examination. Raju commits suicide but Rancho and Farhan saves his life. Rancho sends the wildlife photographs of Farhan to a professional photographer in South Africa and Farhan was called for the job. Raju attends a interview for his job in which he was selected for his new attitude. But it was difficult for him to pass in the examination. Rancho and Farhan with the help of Pia steals the question paper from Virus's office. Virus caught them. Pia's sister was pregnant and Pia a medical student herself went out of his house arguing with his dad for the death of his brother. Pia's sister was in pain and needed quick help. The three idiots were rusticated from the college but still they helped Pia's sister in the delivery of her baby. Rancho with the invention of a special inverter named Virus used the electricity from batteries of cars and with a Vacuum cleaner did the delivery. Virus was happy and realized his mistake after that.
After passing out from the college Rancho went away and set up a new school for the children with all the modern technology and he became a scientist too. Chatur had a bet with Rancho that who is more successful after 10 yrs so they went to search Rancho and finally they got him. Fortunately Rancho was much more successful than Chatur and this is how Rancho won the bet. Pia and Rancho decided to marry after that.
