Fakir Mohan Senapati is a house hold name in Orissa, because of his writings. He is known as father of oriya prose fiction.
Fakir Mohan Senapati was born on 13th January 1843, in a small village named Malli Kashpur in the district of Baleswara, Orissa. His father's name was Laxman Charan Senapati and mother's name was Tulsi Debi Senapati. When he was just one and a half year old, his father died. And he lost his mother at the age of three. During his childhood, he suffered a lot because of his ill health. His grand mother took him to fakirs for a better health. So, when he gained his health as a courtesy gesture towards the fakirs, his grand mother named him Fakir Mohan. Before that, he was called as Brajamohan.
He started his career as a teacher at the age of 18. Later he joined as Deewan of Nilagiri. And than he served as Deewan of some other places in Orissa, such as: Damapada, Dhenkanala, Dasapalla, Pallahada and Keonjhara.
He has written four novels:
1. Chamana Atha Guntha
2. Lacchama
3. Prayaschit
4. Mamu
Some of his short stories are:
1. Rebati
2. Patent Medicine
3. Daka Munshi
4. Randi pua Ananta
5. Adharma Bitta
In the year 1868, he established a press by the name "Utkal Press". Some of his published magazines are:
1. Bodhadayini
2. Nabasambaad
3. Sambad Bahika
He is also remembered among the Oriya people with the following name:
1. Vyasa Kabi
2. Father of Oriya Prose Fiction.
3. Thomas Hardy of Orissa.
4. Katha Samrata.
He took his last breath on 14th June 1918.
