Bindusagar Lake

Bindusagar Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes of the state of Orissa. This picturesque and serene lake is located to the north of the Lingaraja Temple and is one of the prime tourist attractions of Bhubaneswar. In recent times Bindusagar Lake has emerged as a favorite tourist place among domestic and international tourists. It is not only famous for as a tourist destination but also as an ideal picnic spot. Bindusagar Lake has also religious significance as each year the idol of Lord Lingaraja (Lord Shiva) is brought to the lake for a ritual bath. It is believed that it is good take dip in the Bindusagar Lake as the holy water washes away all his sins and he gets rid of all his diseases.

Bindusagar Lake is about 1300 ft in length and 700 ft in width. This beautiful lake has beautiful stones which further add to its charm. A visit to this serene lake gives a feeling of tranquility and peace and soothes the soul. There are numerous temples of Bhubaneshwar located around the Bindusagar Lake. There is an ancient legent associated with the creation of the Bindusagar Lake of Orissa.

According to the ancient legend expressed that he preferred Bhubaneshwar over Benares to His consort, Goddess Parvati. Goddess Parvati disguised Herself as a cowherd woman and went to look at the city of Bhubaneswar. She met two demons Kritti and Vasa, who expressed a wish to marry Her. She asked both the demons to carry Her on their shoulders and when they did so She crushed them under Her weight. Lord Shiva after this incident created the Bindusagar Lake to quench the thirst of Goddess Parvati.
