The rivers of Orissa can be divided into four groups which flow through Odisha / Orissa into the Bay of BengalRivers of Orissa

  1. Rivers having their sources outside the State of Orissa they are Subarnarekha, Brahmani and Mahanadi.

  2. Rivers that have sources inside the State Budhabalanga, Baitarani, Salandi, Rushikulya.

  3. Rivers having their sources inside Odisha / Orissa flow through other states are Bahudu, Vansadhara, and Nagavali.

  4. Rivers that have source inside Odisha, but tributary to rivers flow all the way through other states of India Machkund, Sileru, Kolab, Indravati.


River Mahanadi of Orissa It is the important river of Orissa the sixth largest river in India. Originating from the Amarkantak hills of Bastar Plateau in Raipur district in Madhya Pradesh.

River Brahmani of Orissa It is the second largest river in Orissa. At its origin there are two rivers Sankh and Koel from the Chhotanagpur Plateau of Bihar and the two rivers merge at Veda Vyasa near Rourkela of Sundargarh district , Orissa and form the River Brahmani which flows through the Eastern Ghats in Sundargarh, Deogarh, Kendujhar, Dhenkanal, Cuttack and Jajpur districts into the Coastal Plains and enters into the Bay of Bengal forms in combination with the Mahanadi known as the Dhamara.

River Baitarani of Orissa: Originating from the Gonasika hills of the Kendujhar. It leads into the Bay of Bengal after merging of the Brahmani at Dhamara mouth near Chandbali, Baleshwar.

River Subarnarekha of Orissa: Originating from the Chhotanagpur plateau of Bihar.

River Budhabalanga of orissa: It's source is easterns slops of the Similipal massif. The chief tributaries are the Sone, the Gangadhar, the Catra etc.

River Rushikulya: Having source in the Rushyamala hills of the Eastern Ghats in Phulbani district. It is It has tributaries of Baghua , Dhanei Badanad.

Bahuda river of Orissa: It emerges from Ramgiri hills, eastern ghats in Gajapati districts flows to Bay of Bengal in Andhra Pradesh

Bansadhara river originating from the Durgakangar hills It goes to the Bay of Bengal at Kalingapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

Nagabali River of orissa having its source Bijipur Hills close to Lanji garah.

Salandi river of Orissa starts from the Meghasani Hills of the Similipal massif of Keonjhar district.

Indravati river has its origin at eastern ghats in Kalahandi and as a tributary the falls the Godabari river.

Kolab river having source at Sinkaran hills of eastern Ghats in koraput districts.

Tel River of Orissa is one of the largest river of Odisha which originate from Nabaramgpur district, touch Chhattisgarh, Kalahandi, Balangor, Sonepur and falls in Mahanadi.
