Profile and biography of Sanjukta Panigrahi - The famous Odissi Dancer


Sanjukta Panigrahi was a disciple of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra. She was a famous Odissi dancer and had played an important role in popularising Odissi Dance.

Birth and Early Life of Sanjukta Panigrahi


Sanjukta Panigrahi was born in a Brahmin family in Berhampur, Ganjam District of Orissa on 24th August 1944. Her Father's name was Abhiram Mishra. When sanjukta was a kid, she used to dance on any sound bit and her mother encouraged her to learn dance.

She started learning Odissi Dance under Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, when she was only 4 years old. Dance became her passion and she started performing on stages and received awards in her childhood. In 1952, she got first prize in International Children's Film Festival.

Career of Sanjukta Panigrahi


At the age of 8, she joined 'Kalakshetra', Chennai where she learnt Bharatnatyam and Kathakali. Then she performed in India and abroad through the institute. Then she came back to Orissa at the age of 14 and got a scholarship from Orissa Government to learn Kathak in Mumbai. But she had more interest in Odissi Dance, so she did not continue Kathak and returned to Orissa.

When she was 16, she got married to Raghunath Panigrahi, the famous singer of Orissa. After that they worked together and in 1976, both of them got 'Sangeet Natak Academy Award.' She became the greatest student of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra and got success and popularity through her dance performances. She performed her dance all over India and in many places in abroad. She played a significant role along with Guru Kelucharan mohapatra to make Odissi Dance popular all over the world.

Later Life of Sanjukta Panigrahi


Sanjukta Pangrahi Died of cancer on 4th June, 1997 at the age of 52. In 1999, her husband established 'Sanjukta Panigrahi Memorial Trust' in her memory to promote Odissi Dance and to encourage newcomers.
