Thousands of devotees turn out to pull Rukuna Rath

It is only March and the day temperatures in all major cities of Orissa has already reached about 40 degree celsius. This could not dter thousands of devotees who turned up to witness the famous Rukuna Rath Yatra of Lord Lingaraj at the capital city of Bhubaneswar. There was enthusiasm among the thousands of devotees for this auspicious festival which is observed on the occasion of Ashokastami.

Before the Rath Yatra began the priests of Lingaraj Temple brought the bronze images of all the three deities Chandrasekhar (the incarnation of Lord Lingaraj), Rukmini and Basudeva amidst grand ceremony onto the chariots which colorfully decorated with flowers.

This is an annual festival in which the deities take the chariot and travel a distance of about 2 Km to reach the Mausima Temple. This year though the deities could not reach their destination as the pulling of chariot by the devotees was halted in the evening.

The deities are expected to resume their journey today morning and after reaching their destination, Mausima temple will stay there for 4 days.
