Sarala Das-a great poet from Orissa


Sarala Das was a great poet from Orissa who is regarded as the father of Oriya literature for his quality contribution towards the development of Oriya literature.

Sarala Das was one of the all time great poet from Orissa. He was born in the early part of the fifteenth century at a small village called Kalinaya near Jhunkudain in the district of Cuttack. It is worthwhile to note that Sarala Das is known as ‘UTKAL BALMIKI’ as he has written oriya version of the great epics of Ramayana and Mahabharat. Sarala Das is a highly respected figure of Oriya literature. He is remembered for his phenomenal contribution towards Oriya literature in its initial days.

He has written some of the best literary creations of Oriya literature in the Vilanka Ramayana, the Mahabharat and the Chandi Purana. The Mahabharat contains over eighty three thousand verses and consists of twenty three hundred and nine pages. The Vilanka Ramayana similarly consists of about twenty eight hundred pages. The Chandi Purana another masterpiece from Sarala Das is his biggest creation and consists of almost eighty one hundred pages. It is considered that these epics i.e. the Vilanka Ramayana, the Mahabharat and the Chandi Purana are his best creations.

Sarala Das was a great devotee of goddess Sarala but had equal respect for all other deity. Sarala Das is a respectable person of Orissa and is regarded as the father of Oriya literature because of his immense contribution to enrich Oriya literature.
