Khandagiri kumbha mela from 10 Feb to 18 Feb 2011
Histroy of Kumbha mela at Khandagiri hill :-
Once sambhasur suffered from the disease 'Krushna'. He prayed Lord Sun (Suryadevata) and by the order of Lord Sun he took bath in Chandrabhaga on seventh day of Magha ( Magha saptami) then reached at foothill of Khandagiri hill by walk. There he ate 'Khandagiri' (the pieces of stone) and got well from the disease 'Krushna'. From that day, every year seventh day of month Magha large number of sages come to Chandrabhaga, take bath walk to Khandagiri hill and make religious ritual fires at the foothill of Khandagiri. They belive that by this they can free from all diseases. As like world famous car festival in Puri, on the occasion of Kumbhamela, every year Lord Ananta keshari, the presiding God, goes to nearby village namely Jagamara (presently Naga matha) for nine days from seventh day of Magha to fulmoon but now a days only one day i.e. on the seventh day of Magha Lord is going to Jagamara Village. Besides this from nine years ago 'National Kharvela festival' is observed during this mela.
On the occasion of Kumbha mels :-
Though the villagers of only Jagamara, Gandamunda, Aiginia,Ghatikia, Baramunda and Bharatpur take part in this festival, lakhs of people from all over nation come here to observe the grand mela.
Large no. Of temporary shops of wooden, utensils, bamboo and various things placed from various places of Orissa. Jatra mahasamar is another attraction of this mela.
